So today we had the intro lecture to the Venture Culture module. Very excited about this one, as the key goal is to come up with a business idea, make the business plan and then do what you like with this idea. For me, something I would really like to do once I finish Uni, is have my own company in the creative industries. What that company would do though is still unclear in my mind. I could go for the design house route… but I think there are too many as it is! Talk about a little fish in a big pond! You could argue ‘well not so much if you specialised in something’ – which is true – I’m just not sure yet.
Anyway, should be great!
So we were asked what companies have inspired you aside from the usual Apple/Virgin corps, and I mentioned Animal – as it was set up by two surfers in Poole who were sick of their watch straps breaking so they came up with a webbing and Velcro construction for the watch straps that was incredibly tough and also looked great. From that it went into other sports such as windsurfing and snowboarding and then the brand became a house hold name before morphing into a sports fashion brand covering extreme low end (stationary/key rings) all the way up to technical gear such as wetsuits and snowboarding clothing.
Now I have to go off and research 3 ideas for a potential product or service. Better watch some Dragons Den…
