After a quite amazing year for technology and design we can only look forward to what the coming year has in store for us all. With tablets being taken to the mainstream I am sure we will see more and more people using tablets in their everyday life and with the second iPad being released around April/May time (which I have been holding out for) more and more content will be specifically designed with tablets in mind. Magazines such as Bransons 'PROJECT' will become a new standard with print publishing slowly but surely fading away.
As for the social networks Facebook's numbers will continue to rise in both corporate value and users. Twitter will carry on as usual, MySpace will be sold, and Google will continue to struggle getting their feet in the social arena.
New features aside, mobile will be the big thing for 2011, not just for Facebook but for other social networks and generally the web itself. More and more information will be accessed on the move and web apps will continue to spread across the web, enhancing peoples lives and simplifying tasks for easier everyday living.
Currently there are around 100million active users using Facebook via their mobile phones, I believe this will double in the next year if not triple due to more than 200 mobile operators in 60 countries working to enhance and promote Facebook Mobile products.
Security will also need to be stepped up to cope with mobile data and the increasing dependence on online services. Users will also need to become more educated about security risks and the simple ways in which they can protect themselves as well as their place of work. Privacy in turn will need to be highlighted making sure that people understand what their data means to them to avoid problems such as identity theft and misrepresentation later in life.
- Flash still won't be a big thing on Smartphone's
- HTML5 + CSS3 will boom
- Social networks will integrate more with location
- 3D will learn to loose the glasses
But all in all.
2011 will be the year of the tablet.
...Oh and hopefully I'll go surfing for my 21st in April. Or snowboarding in Switzerland...or maybe both. Happy NYE everyone! [EDIT: I spent my 21st in Switzerland in the end...]
