Cave Automatic Virtual Environment or CAVE as I like to shorten it too is an immersive virtual reality environment. The user(s) will be positioned inside the cube to which walls have content projected on from projectors outside the cube.
"The name is also a reference to the allegory of the Cave in Plato's Republic where a philosopher contemplates perception, reality and illusion" wikisays.
To create a 3D environment CAVE uses Stereoscopic LCD shutter glasses distinguish the two different images created by the projectors for each eye to create a 3D effect. The glasses are syncronised so that each eye only sees the correct image.
As the CAVE system needs multiple projectors, fairly advanced computing power and a dedicated workspace CAVE systems are fairly expensive, but to over come this clusters of desktop PC’s are used and only one screen are used at a 45 degree angle to the user to create a sense of distance whilst still being able to produce a 3D environment.
